Today was the Folsom networking Christmas party. Everyone was to bring a gift costing $10 or less or something gently used. The usual stuff. Should be straightforward.
I’ll admit I’m a stickler for organization and well run processes. And I think some people enjoyed the event but from my perspective it was a bit of a train wreck.
Rather than everyone getting their gift by number or stealing someone else and being done…
Everyone got their gift by number (randomly assigned). Then opened gifts by number. Then we rolled dice. Different numbers were either pass to the left, or pass to the right, or steal, or don’t steal.
Left and right was hard, though. We weren’t all at one table. There were two long tables plus two side booths. I’m not sure if left and right was ever fully defined.
Eventually everyone got a turn after much disorganization.
Looking at who from the group was organizing it, I think a lot of people in business and in life have a hard time seeing the big picture. Also knowing how to plan and organize an event.
A difference in perspective is also that I spend a lot of time thinking about how to get things done and planning things so they more often than not do get done. I am accepting more and more that other people are just happy if there is positive energy and their auras are balanced and that the right color of self actualized synergy is achieved.
Since I’m never quite sure what the business model is where self actualized synergy is involved, I stick with getting stuff done. That does exclude some people from being my customer however I don’t think I’d have much to talk to them about anyway. So it works out.
